A Thursday: Subtle, Convincing, Thoughtful Thriller
‘A Thursday’ is one of those films, a mixture of characters and situations that capture an audience’s attention.
Yami Gautam (of Vicky Donor Fame) is a fascinating character whose journey piques viewers’ interest in following her outside of her comfort zone. Her performance deserves to become a highlight of her career so far. From a convincing ‘fear face’ to the explosion of emotions in a scene where she reveals the twist to a character, she nails every shade of grey that comes from her character’s spiral throughout this film. From an ambitious accountant to a self-destructive school teacher, viewers are sure to be moved by this performance in every way.
The script by Behzad Khambata holds the key to this film’s mysterious elements. The first half of the film sails smoothly, with no turbulence in the narration because of Khambata’s screenplay and Sumeet Kotian’s editing. The cinematography by Anuj Rakesh Dhawan is brilliant. It adds the necessary gloom, but surprisingly it is not overdone and feels right in line with this dark plot which is full of mysteries that never end.
The single most annoying thing about the movie is ‘Neha Dhupia’. It’s not that she didn’t do justice to the character or failed at being convincing in her role, it’s just that her character was very similar to what she had already portrayed in “Sanak.” As film actors, it’s hard for them to discover new things about themselves or discover anything challenging when they keep portraying the same type of character over and over again.
That said, ‘A Thursday’ becomes easily recommended because it has all of the elements expected of a good thriller film and yet the message carries weight.
